North Lakes Ozswoosh Rookie’s Program – Sundays 8.00 to 9.30am (Ages 10 – 15)
Catering to both beginner and experienced basketballers, The Rookie’s Program is best suited to those aged 10 to 15 years (however, older or younger athletes may be considered based on skill level and Coachability). The program focuses on body movement fundamentals to help participants improve dexterity and become masters of their own body. Correct methods for running, stopping, pivoting, passing, receiving, dribbling, shooting, defence and rebounding are all covered. Individual offensive and defensive concepts are also introduced. Participants learn fundamental cuts/leads, post and perimeter moves. The curriculum also introduces players to shooting fundamentals.
At this level we cast a critical eye on skill execution and provide constructive written feedback identifying where participants need to work hardest. Participants are challenged to better themselves and set minor goals. A take home program for participants to map their progress is provided. This teaches athletes to break down success into an accumulation of a number of achievements over time. A more traditional coaching style is adopted.
The Rookie’s Program curriculum builds over time with 4 levels (Rookie, DOERS, Blue Chipper and All Star) and is the feeder system to Ozswoosh Academy which provides more advanced drills and adaptive coaching methods to more skilled athletes. We recommend younger Ozswoosh participants start at the Rookie Level to ensure progressive development.
